EDIT: Q&A
(Read From the bottom going up)
Q: Do you have any comments on your app acceptance scheme?
A: We want to help developers to be very successful. We also want a store where customers feel great about the quality of what they get, so the numbers speak for themselves. [Kind of a non-answer here]

Q: With Peer to Peer, can you have access to other iTunes library?
A: You can see them but I don’t know if you can play them.

Q: Is there a physical hardware problem on the first-gen iPhone that prevents it from doing MMS.
A: It’s a different radio, so it is a physical issue.

Q: Are you addressing some of the performance issues in the current OS? It’s slightly laggy, are you going to address that in 3.0.
A: We absolutely take performance very seriously. These units, because they’re tethered, are more laggy than you would see on standalone units. But we are addressing lagginess in our own ways.

Q: On the voice memo, you mentioned external microphones. Could you use an off-the-shelf microphone?
A: Yes absolutely, if you have an adapter.

Q: Will you make any promises about push notification in terms of uptime?
A: No. We want it to be as reliable as possible.

Q: Bluetooth human input device profile for external keyboards.
A: We have nothing to announce.

Q: Can you say anything about hardware?
A: No.

Q: Netbooks?
A: Nothing to announce today.

Q: Where do you stand on tethering?
A: There’s two pieces needed to support that: client side and working with carriers. We’re absolutely supporting tethering in the client side in iPhone 3.0, but we’re working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks. But we are building that support into iPhone 3.0.

Q: Are people able to trade files, say music files, through iPods with this?
A: We have the ability to stream music to music apps, and certainly a game, if a game has music in the game it would be possible to download game tracks, but if would be confusing for other music apps with downloadable music that isn’t through the app store.

Q: So you can control devices…?
A: Yes, now you can, with third-party applications, control and talk to accessories over Bluetooth.

Q: Could you qualify a bit more about the peer to peer. It looks like it’s available across the two iPhones, but it seems like you can do peer to peer with other Bluetooth devices.
A: It’s really a device to device Bluetooth connection. It’s 1 to 1, using Bluetooth and Bonjour to discover other devices and make an IP connection.

Q: Video is still a blackhole if you visit a website with flash.
A: We have no announcements on Flash today.

Q: Josh Quittner, Time: Why did it take so long so get Cut and Paste into the iPhone?
A: There’s a user interface you need to design, security issues, and “there’s a lot of pieces you need to worry about instead of getting osmething that doesn’t work right.”

Q&A’s starting now.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it seemed like it.
it felt like it.
most importantly, we dreamed and longed for it. apple has just given us its biggest reward for using/purchasing their revolutionary device:

FW3.0 is the new flagship firmware for the iPhone and iPodTouch
by m.o.r.
* all photos used are from the Gizmodo liveblog

it's been quite a while since we, iphone users, have had a major boost in our user experience. fw2.0 did deliver to us a whole new world with it's debut of the appstore yet we still felt that it needed a bit more. for one reason or another, the iphone still felt like a multimedia device that only had a phone app built-in. the web bore witness to the millions of iphone users' outcry for a full-fledged/all-in-one mobile device and apple finally listened.

that day has come to fruition.

Copy, Cut, and Paste

after a long and hard struggle of working around due to the iphone not having one of most basic features of a smartphone device, fw3.0 finally debuts the cut-copy-paste, and boy does it feel like a warm homestyle meal prepared by a most knowledgeable chef.

the basic idea is like an amalgamated fruit of both the jailbreak community's Clippy and hClipboard. you double-tap on a word and a pop-up appears with the "cut/copy/paste" choices as shown on the photo above.

to select a larger body of text, you drag the two pin-style icons/cursors at the end of the selected word to highlight all the text you want to include and tap, cut, or copy to get the whole selection into the clipboard.

it also works for selecting whole paragraphs (for plain text/non rich text formatted) by holding your finger on the paragraph to select it. to remove/undo the selection, you just shake the iphone.

to paste the text you simply double-tap on an empty space, presumably on or near the area you want to paste it in, and the pop-up appears. you just tap "paste" and the previously selected text is then pasted. simple, clean, and very intuitive indeed.

you can copy links too and open them in a new safari page!

it sure took a long time, albeit the jailbreak community spoon-fed the best methods, but apple did it right this time. this is the best copy-cut-&-paste feature amongst all capactive touchscreen smartphones bar none.

Push Notification

we were promised a better solution to background processes in the past and apple held-out on us for so long. on fw3.0, we would now have the much sought-after push notification service. it works by having the iphone have a persistent connection so the apps can notify you if there has been an activity even though the app is technically closed. it notifies you via text alerts (much like SMS alerts) wherein a new message badge appears on the app's icon and an audio alert sounds-off. a perfect example would be IM apps works much like the SMS app now. it will have a "new message" badge on the icon if someone sends you an IM message.

but why is this better than background processes according to apple? it preserves battery life, a heck of a lot more battery life. as per apple's findings, having background processes for an app consumes 80% of the battery versus just 23% by using push. we'll see how this works out but this sure is better than not having any means for background processes at all (unless you're jailbroken ).

Messaging

all iphone users around the globe have always pondered why the powers-that-be never included individual sms deletion and sms forwarding amongst the basic features of the iphone's sms app. they seem to love keeping a motherload of sms messages forever on their units. after 2 years since the iphone's birth, the apple engineers and executives must have accumulated 100,000+ messages and finally realized: "hey i think i want to delete 1 or 2 of my sms messages and forward a couple of them as well".

after 5 minutes of code rewriting and a respring later, poof!
the 2 most basic sms features of a mobile phone's sms function are born on the iphone fw3.0.

the iphone used to be known worldwide as the only smartphone/mobilephone that could not send and receive MMS. with fw3.0, the gods at apple have finally come to their senses and decided to include the ever elusive MMS. the old SMS app has been rewritten and rebranded to "Messaging" and would enable sending of photos, audio messages, and vcards! it may not be a milestone moment for mobile devices in general, but it sure is a huge leaping bound for the iphone community.

hmmm, hold on a sec...MMS also equates to video when it comes to mobile phones. it seems that the gods at apple tend to lean on the qualities of being video camera shy.

we all know that messaging is the iphone's most crippled function. nevertheless, finally having individual sms deleting, sms forwarding, MMS, and its other elusive sibling copy-&-paste on this most revolutionary piece of mobile computing is still an olympic moment. having apple incorporate such "standard" features proves to offer a lot of merits. those features alone save us, users, a sizeable lump of money when it comes to 3rd-party-app-workarounds. with each new firmware that comes out thereafter, we won't need to patiently wait for the apps to be ported in order for our iphones to feel complete. the jailbreak scene's MMS/SMS commercial apps can now humbly step aside for the apple-implementation royalty has officially dawned unto iphonekind.

Added Bluetooth Features and Peer-to-Peer Support

it now supports A2DP so this profile enables high quality audio. we can now finally use a stereo BT headphones or speakers with the iphone seemlessly. audiophiles rejoice!

we can also use BT to connect 2 devices while using an app. the two iphones discover each other using BT and directly communicate with each other while inside a game or social app. this allows for the passing of information back and forth. multi-player games are no longer required to have a wifi network to connect to players.

3rd Party accessories support

it's been widely known that apple has been quite strict when it came to a 3rd party's access to the dock connector. fw3.0 also marks the mellowing of apple's heart and welcomes all hardware/accessory manufacturers to freely plug-in their novel accesory inventions!

so what does this imply? think of it this way, Macgyver would be screaming with joy and singing hallelujah towards the apple heavens!

Spotlight

remember when the jailbreak community's quickgold was unleashed by the best devs Zataang & Bigboss? it's the world's first incarnation of the idea of universal search! apple simply ignored the novel piece of coding poetry on its further fw2.0 and up releases......until Palm's eyes sparkled upon landing its eyes on it and swiped the beautiful feature as a major marketing arm for it's new brainchild, the Pre. apple was stopped at its feet when Palm revealed how powerful this feature could be during the MWC '09 unveiling of the Pre.

well, without further adieu, fw3.0 marks the official apple debut of the jailbreak community Quickgold app's function on an apple-sanctioned release via firmware-inclusive update. we now have the iphone's version of the mac's Spotlight!

with a simple swipe on the springboard, Spotlight is invoked. you can now:
- type a name for the fastest dialing method without using a 1-touch dial app
- type an address and it brings up results from your addressbook whereby tapping it launches maps
- type a song and ipod search results appear
- type an app and you now have the fastest app launcher without the hassle of flicking through screen pages
- type a calendar appointment and you get to launch the calendar app and view that specific day's appointment details
- type a keyword you remember on a specific email and speedily locate the transcient email
- and if any other app is written to support the new Spotlight, its data will also be available for search

Spotlight is a nod to the brillant minds of the jailbreak scene and it's magnificent that apple has finally recognized them for their service to the worldwide community.

Landscape Typing

another one of the iphone users' most requested features is for stubby-fingered folks, like i am, to finally be able to type using the landscape keyboard universally. with fw3.0, all major/key apps may now utilize and bestow ultimate freedom for the old stumpy hands of yore.

Multiple email Photo Sending

i have never sent someone just a single photo attached to an email.
apparently apple engineers liked to do so......all the time.
americans really love getting tons of short emails, so much so that they do tend to email a whole lot more rather than send a cute/short/little sms instead.
all of us who do otherwise simply cried out of frustration.
apple, being the warm-hearted and loving folks that they are, complied. 'nuff said.

Voice Memos

all the appstore 3rd-party folks are now trembling for fw3.0 is also the debut of apple's official voice memo capabilities!

but why is this new add-on significant when we already have appstore apps that do so?

that's definitely true. but if you want to sneak-in that 1 more app on the springboard and yet you do not have space, simply remove the appstore voice memo app and use apple's very own instead. not only is real estate precious in the land of our fathers, but real estate also proved to be a most valuable asset on our iphone's springboard as well.

Shake to Shuffle Music

remember the owner/webmaster of the ipodtouchfans forum, Skylar? he released a jailbreak app called PocketTouch since the release of the old fw1.0.2 (that firmware seems to feel like eons ago). PocketTouch lets you shake the iphone/ipodtouch while the ipod app is playing music and each shake will shuffle the songs being played on the ipod app. apple tried to recruit and employ Skylar when apple was developing the first iphone SDK. Skylar, being the dedicated and humble jailbreak community pillar, respecfully declined.

apple's fw3.0 incorporates the shake-to-shuffle music feature. a round of applause for the jailbreak community's Skylar, father of the shake-to-shuffle.

Turn-by-Turn

the SDK used to prevent developers from releasing turn-by-turn apps. then why bother with the iphone having a gps chip on the 3G? big question mark pops-up on each and every iphone 3G user's head. maybe that's a bit of an exagerration. but i, for one, had one hovering on top of my head while looking at an iphone 3G at the apple store.

but then again, i guess age really does soften-up a person's heart. that's because for fw3.0, developers can now use corelocation to make turn-by-turn applications. developers can now create turn-by-turn applications using the GPS information from the iphone and combining it with their own maps while not depending on 3G connectivity or google.

hmm...sounds familiar...maybe a deja vu? hmmm...but we all remember that there is an app already released on the appstore developed by XRoad called G-Map East and G-Map West! it even had quite a few updates already!

try and search for it itunes right now for as of this writing, the XRoad apps have apparently vanished without a trace. this is another one of the apple appstore's episode of the Twilight Zone.
