xGPS works fine except for the turn-by-turn
Depending on how much level of detail you want the maps to be.. I've got Metro Manila at 0-6, Batangas-Laguna at 0-3 and Olongapo & Baguio areas at 0 and the total size of my maps is just around 170 MB..
You'll need the xGPS manager at xgps.xwaves.net/index.php/Main_Page. This allows you to manage your maps and saves you on provider bandwidth charges since you can use xGPS offline.

Sounds logical since you really can't see much at 6 My first try was just downloading maps at 0 and while it helps if you have an idea of the area, it kinda doesn't help much if you're lost so I experimented somewhat.
It does however help to have several levels so you can zoom out just in case you're lost or looking for a particular street/location. The only irritating thing about xGPS is it keeps locking in to your current position when you try to pan when GPS is on. You'll have to turn off GPS so you can pan around while trying to get your bearings, then turn it back on once you've found them
Overall, it's one of the cool GPS tools i've ever used short of buying a dedicated GPS device

Yes you can.. In fact, it's much better to download your maps in sections rather than doing one huge map. For one, it's easier to manage, plus it's faster to download
The great thing about having the maps downloaded to your phone is that you can use just the GPS functionality alone to track your route, meaning you can turn off Edge/3G, which translates to savings on your part
PS
Btw, when I mentioned turn-by-turn doesn't work, i meant the the voice navigation/driving directions Other than that, everything works superb in real-time.

Thanks for the information, been exploring it really cool:) i have one more question tho and i hope it won't be a bother. Could you perhaps let me know what the filenames are of the maps you have downloaded so far? heres the thing: I downloaded a map of Cebu then i SSHd it into my device since i have no wifi access in the office. Then, I downloaded Manila map but it replaced the Cebu map file on my PC. That means if I SSH that, my Cebu map will be replaced. I'd like to know what the filenaming convention is so that I can have multiple maps via SSHing. thanks:) Hope that made sense!

Unfortunately, xGPS maintains only one file for all the maps. The filename is xGPS_map.db, and that is what is being copied onto the iphone to the /private/var/mobile/Library folder coming from the (well, in Vista at least) \Users\username\documents\xGPS Manager folder.
If you don't have wi-fi at the office but are capitalizing on the speed of your wired office network to get your maps (sneaky you), what you can do is simply to compile first all your map sections in xGPS manager and when you're ready and happy with your map selections, you can then SSH it to your iPhone.
Once you get home, you can then do a Retrieve Device Maps so you get all the maps currently on your phone, before you upload what you have stored at home
