Been receiving this question a lot in the LC, so thought of posting as per Musclenerd's tweet.

How can i find out if a 3GS is Old or New Bottrom 3Gs?

Now to check...
Go to Settings > General > About > Serial Number
Check the the Serial Number of your device and use this table as a guide :




All 3Gs with ZERO and ONE for 3rd digit are NEW BOOTROM units.






You can also use a Windows tool called iDetector V1.0.1 to check the status of your unit if it is a new or lod bootrom unit.

With the release of the new iPad's accessories, has anybody realized that the SD card reader may just be the solution to the tethered jailbreak problem. Someone just needs to figure out how to inject the blackrain code

Just to update, since its year 2010 na, heres the new indication of whether device is old bootrom or new bootrom:

Check 3rd to 5th digit:

1. If 3rd digit is 0 = New Bootrom

2. If 3rd digit is 9 and

(a) 4th&5th digits less than 42 = old bootrom

(b) 4th&5th digits greater than 44 = new bootrom

(c) 4th&5th digits between 42 and 44 = mixed results

my iphone has old bootrom and my firmware version is 4.0.1. can I downgrade it to old firmware so that I can jailbreak and unlock it?

Apple stopped signing of any firmware less than 4.0, so you cant just restore/downgrade to any firmware less than 4.0. For 3gs You can only downgrade to a lower firmware (3.1.3, 3.1.2, 3.1....) if and only if you managed to save 3.1.3/3.1.2/3.1... SHSH firmware in saurik server thru cydia.

I just jailbroke and unlocked a 3Gs on 4.1 running iPad BB. Serial number indicates a newer 3Gs... Do I need blackrain to do a tethered jailbreak or limerain?
