Your iphone came either from new zealand or australia. New zealand sells their iphone unlocked while australia sells them locked but offers carrier unlocking. So it's hard to say. It's the exact example i mentioned in my post.

Hi Guys, I am not sure if this is the right thread to ask but I would appreciate if someone can help me. My iPhone 3G has a serial number of MB496X. Can you tell me if this is factory unlocked phone?

Also, I am running of 3.1.2 OS firmware with bb 5.11.07 - I jailbreaked my iPhone using Spirit, will it be safe if I upgrade to 3.1.3 via itunes? (as this will update my bb to 5.12.0.1.

Thank you and hoping for your response.

Iphone 3G model MB496X is carrier locked to either of the 3 Australian providers, Optus, Telstra or Vodafone.

No it is not safe to upgrade to 3.1.3 ofw, you will lose your unlock. Updating will update you baseband to 5.12.01 which is unlockable as of the moment (unless it has the rare 5.8 bootloader). Stick to 3.1.2 ofw or use 3.1.3 cfw.

Welcome to Applei mireakel.

since its an AUS unit, what you can do is request the aus telco to factory unlock the unit via iTunes. I think you'll need to pay a certain sum, but I think its worth it as you'll never have to worry about baseband stuff again.

Thanks. I bought this from someone here in Australia and it is already unlocked and not jailbroken. Does this mean that this is factory unlocked?

yes, it's already the same as factory unlocked once unlocked by the carrier.

If you can use any SIM, without Jailbreaking your device - then its Factory Unlocked.

You can use Spirit and have it unlocked if and only if:
1. Iphone 3g is on firmware 3.1.2 and you have official carrier SIM to activate it (e.g. ATT sim for ATT locked units, Globe SIM for Globe-locked units), jailbreak with Spirit and then unlock with blacksn0w from cydia
2. Iphone 3g is factory unlocked: just use spirit to jailbreak

i see, thanks sa reply. anyway, im using 16GB 3GS and its factory unlock, dito ko sa singapore binili sa starhub pero im using m1 simcard now,sa tingin ko its factory unlocked, pero may hesitation na ako na pag JB ko using spirit eh mawala yung unlock, sabi pa naman dun sa starhub na hindi daw sila nagrerestore ng iphone, hehe.. yung 16GB 3G kase ni esmi hanggang ngayon wait pa kami sa dev team para sa unlock eh, accidentally siya na-update last april, kaya ayun almost 2 mos. na siyang ipod touch. hehe.. anyway, sure talaga sir na pwede spirit ha? thanks. maya i-try ko.
