Steve Jobs has reportedly responded to an email about performance issues with iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G.

I've waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I've read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I'm not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.

It's likely that Jobs is referring to the iOS 4.1 firmware which is currently being tested by developers. This firmware is also thought to bring a fix for the iPhone 4 proximity issues.

same here hoping that there will be a fix for 3Gs on iOS4. however, at my end, iOS 4.0.1 seemed to make my 3G perform better compared to when it was still in FW 3. the only setback is that some apps (like cydia) tend to crash at some point whenever the available RAM goes down to 8 but the over-all performance of my 3G got better with iOS 4.0.1

Apple has already released ios 4.1 GM to devs.

well i never really used it much with 4.0 so im not too familiar with how slow it actually was.. but comparing it to the 3gs with opening and closing apps it seems pretty much on par

Seems like a very positive news to me!

But beware: Stay away from 4.1 if you value your Jailbreak and especially if you need the software unlock.

It applies to all 3G units regardless if it's factory unlocked or not.

Prince, that's what I meant. You CAN update your 3G iphone to 4.1 FW which should fix the slowness problems experienced by users on their 3G with 4.0.1
