Also, Musclenerd just pointed on his twitter account that “One should keep the device plugged in while doing the Baseband Upgrade, or flashing the Baseband”. So, just make sure your device is charged and plugged in through the whole process.
If you do flash your baseband via redsn0w, please keep it plugged into USB the whole time. You don’t want your battery to die during the flash process!
This guide works both on iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 so feel free to use the version you like. But, it doesn’t really matter what you use, your baseband will be upgraded anyway. So use whatever you like, and report a success story on our Facebook fan page for others.
WARNING — YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.
1.There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
2.If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
3.Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that). UPDATE: fixrecovery.exe has been released to resolve 1015 error on OFW restore.
Error 1015 fix thead here
Your device must be presently be on 4.1 or 4.2.1 OFW for this tutorial to work!
**************REDSNOW CANNOT UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE*************
IF YOU ARE NOT ON 4.1 OR 4.2.1, UPDATE FIRMWARE USING ITUNES FIRST!!
This JB/Unlock is only best if you are currently on 5.14/5.15 baseband.
If you are on a lower baseband, use CFW (to retain baseband) instead!!
Update. redsn0w 9.6rc18 is untethered on all devices.
How to Jailbreak and/or Unlock iPhone 3GS, 3G on Basebands 5.14.02 and 05.15.04 Using redsn0w 0.9.6b5
Step 1: You need “redsn0w 0.9.6b5” (or higher as long as it's 9.6) and iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1, you can find the links below.
Developer @sbingner (author of TetherMe) has made some excellent progress devising a new hactivation method that kills two birds with one stone for all you ultrasn0w unlockers. His tool, “Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM)” tricks your iPhone and iTunes into creating legitimate activation tickets even though you’re unlocked with ultrasn0w. This means you get the full benefit of push applications, and your battery life increases substantially. If you’d like to try it out, check out
www.bingner.com/SAM.html
To help make it easier to try out @sbingner’s tool, we’ve updated redsn0w to include a new “Deactivate” option for the 3G and 3GS. Use this option *after* you’ve installed SAM…it will remove the normal patches made to lockdownd and let SAM take over. (sbingner plans on making a button to do this within SAMPrefs too). Great work, @sbingner!

***DO NOT DOWNLOAD IPAD IPSW. IT IS NOT NEEDED!!***
UPDATE: If your device is on 4.3.3, use redsn0w 9.6rc16 and browse for 4.3.3 OFW in redsn0w. Redsn0w 9.6rc16 has the "install ipad baseband" function and is untethered on all devices!
Step 2: Run redsn0w and click browse, give it iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.2.1 you downloaded in step 1. Remember, if you are on Windows 7 or Vista and having problems running it, change the compatibility mode, by right clicking on the file and clicking properties. From the options check the compatibility tab and change it to XP or Lower. Also, try to run it as administrator if nothing else helps.
If you are on 4.1, browse redsn0w to 4.1 ipsw for your iPhone model.
If you are on 4.2.1, browse redsn0w to 4.2.1 ipsw for your iPhone model.
DO NOT BROWSE AND POINT REDSN0W TO AN IPAD FIRMWARE!!
Step 3: Wait for the file to be identified, once done click next.
Tick both "install cydia" and "install ipad baseband" if you are on unjailbroken OFW.
Tick only "install ipad baseband" if you are currently on jailbroken firmware.
Tick only "install cydia" if you only want to jailbreak. Works for 3G/3Gs/iP4.
It will be a TETHERED jailbreak on 4.2.1 FW for 3Gs new bootrom and iP4 units.
If you are on 4.1 FW for 3Gs or iP4, use Limera1n!
Step 4: Now, redsn0w will guide you to put your device in DFU mode, follow the simple instructions.
Step 5: Wait for Redsn0w to create the custom firmware file. Give it sometime in flashing the baseband. This will take a while so do not do anything silly here. Just sit back and wait for a confirmation message.
Step 6: After the confirmation, your iPhone 3GS or 3G should restart and you should be able to see a completely Jailbroken iPhone. You can confirm the new baseband by going into the settings > General > About. Your new baseband should be 06.15.00.
Step 7: You can use the Cydia > Ultrasn0w guide posted here to unlock your iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G.
Open Cydia, let it run for a few minutes until a pop up window will appear and ask you to update Cydia. For beginners you can select UPGRADE ESSENTIAL. After Cydia has been upgraded. Open Cydia and Click Manage. CLick Sources/Edit/Add and add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com. And then to unlock device install ultrasn0w
Final Step: Share it, like it and make sure not to update your device ever without talking to me or exploring this site for answers.
Enjoy the unlocked iPhone 3GS and 3G on your new baseband 06.15.00. Talk to us on Facebook fan page and we’ll try to guide through the whole process.

Update #5: Unlockers have been reporting mixed results about GPS functionality at 06.15.00. Until we can track down what differentiates those who retain GPS vs. those who lose it, be conservative and assume you’ll lose GPS at 06.15.00. As we work on finding the cause (and possibly a fix), please report your personal findings in our comments section. (Update: early indications are that while 06.15.00 is capable of GPS, it will require some further hacks. But please still be conservative and assume you will lose GPS at 06.15, in case the hacks don’t work).
