Apple today announced the new iPod touch which features a Retina display, FaceTime video calling, HD video recording, Apple’s A4 chip, 3-axis gyro, iOS 4.1 and Game Center—all combined in the thinnest and lightest iPod touch ever. The new iPod touch features up to 40 hours of music playback and seven hours of video playback on a single battery charge.

“We’ve put our most advanced technology inside the new iPod touch,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Whether you’re listening to music, playing games, making FaceTime video calls, browsing the web, capturing HD video or watching TV shows and movies, the new iPod touch with its Retina display, A4 chip and 3-axis gyro is more fun than ever.”

Apple’s stunning Retina display makes everything on iPod touch look even more incredible, whether playing games, watching video, browsing the web or flicking through photos. The Retina display has 960 x 640 pixels—four times as many pixels than before. The resulting 326 pixels per inch is so dense that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels when iPod touch is held at a normal distance, making text, images and video look sharper, smoother and more realistic.

With the new front-facing camera and mic, iPod touch users can make FaceTime video calls over Wi-Fi. While today's keynote was an awesome one, it is quite unfortunate that Apple is a bit coy on the true resolution of the rear "HD" camera.

They did mention that it is 960x720 and captures 720p HD video, but the new 4th gen ipod touch's rear cam still photo resolution is just a mere 0.7 megapixel. It's nowhere near the iphone 4 camera's 5 megapixel nor does it even come to par with the 1st gen iphone's lowly 2 megapixel.

It is a truly Apple move, "always leave something behind so they'll crave for more on the next hardware refresh".

0.7 megapixel cam now did i get that right? puttingg an inferior cam to a new iDevice launch even subordinate to the 2megapix cam in the iphone 3g? youve got to be kidding

Yet another new potential deal breaker for some people. It's not a far-fetched idea due to the significant price difference with the iphone 4.

When looking at the Engadget hands-on video (@15 seconds), it seems that the iPod touch 4th generation screen doesn’t have the same wide angle viewing as the iPhone 4 next to it. This could just be our eyes playing tricks on us (or even the camera) but Apple isn’t clear in the iPod touch literature that the screen is indeed IPS.

Also, Apple could have the screen settings set differently in these display iPod touches.

Here’s the scary: In Apple’s all-consuming quest to become just a little bit thinner and keep the fat margins, did they not only sacrifice the still camera (.7Megapixel?!) but also skimp on the screen? Thanks reader Alex!
